Statement On Governor Wolf's Veto Of S.C.R.R.R.1

The League of Women Voters of PA commends Governor Wolf for his veto of S.C.R.R.R.1 on January 10, 2022.  This resolution would have stopped Pennsylvania’s participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI).  We applaud the Governor’s desire to cut carbon pollution from fossil fuel burning power plants.  The RGGI resolution would go a long way in curbing climate change and would invest the RGGI auction proceeds in lowering consumer energy costs, according to Clean Power PA.

ClimateNexus polled Pennsylvania voters and found that 7 in 10 voters are in favor of the state becoming part of RGGI.  This program would create 27,000 jobs and boost the state economy nearly $2 billion according to the RGGI Coalition.

With Governor Wolf’s veto he rejects the misinformation that labeled RGGI funds as taxes and claimed that jobs would be lost if PA joined RGGI.  The governor is also standing up for the citizens of Pennsylvania in helping to reduce asthma attacks and other health problems caused by air pollution.  Without RGGI we will be stagnating in a dead-end fossil-fuel generated economy and not transitioning into a cleaner more sustainable energy future.  Thank you again Governor Wolf for your vision and leadership.
