Statement On President Biden And Vice President Harris's Support For Voting Rights

Today, President Biden and Vice President Harris spoke to the American people about the urgent need to pass legislation to protect the constitutional right to vote and the integrity of our elections. Watch a recording of their remarks here.

The fight for voting rights has been a long and enduring battle. The Freedom to Vote Act is a transformative voting rights bill that will protect and expand the right to vote, decrease the influence of money in politics and curb partisan gerrymandering. This legislation will put power back into the hands of American voters by prioritizing voting access and participation, while also modernizing future elections to ensure a system that everyone can trust. In addition, the Senate introduced the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (JLVRAA), which will fully restore the Voting Rights Act (VRA) and ensure renewed oversight, accountability, and justice in our democracy. We must ensure that every voter is treated fairly at the ballot box and has equal access to vote.

“We urge the US Senate to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act immediately” said Terrie Griffin, President of the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania. “It is abundantly clear that we cannot take anything for granted; our rights are threatened and I appreciate the President and Vice President speaking out and calling for action, as everyone should. We need this kind of active leadership. The League will be here, fighting to defend our democracy and to return control of our government back where it belongs — into the hands of the people.”

“President Biden and Vice President Harris are addressing the most critical issue of the day — how we move forward together as a nation,” said Susan Gobreski, Board Director for Government Policy. “It will only happen if we recognize every person's right to participate. Here in Pennsylvania, we are seeing multi-pronged efforts to limit participation and consolidate power for a few elites — those with power want to keep it, and replace the will of the voters with their own. We thank the administration for working on this issue.”

Contact Senators Toomey and Casey TODAY and tell them to vote yes on the Freedom to Vote Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (JLVRAA) to return control of our government back where it belongs — into the hands of the people.
