In a 6-3 ruling June 30, the Supreme court struck down President Joe Biden’s student loan debt relief program. The program would have allowed eligible borrowers to cancel up to $20,000 in debt, helping approximately 43 million Americans.
Student loan debt has become a rapidly growing problem in the US, as college costs have nearly doubled since 1990, and student loan debt has increased more than sevenfold. The debt also disproportionately affects people of color, women, and lower income people.
