LWV Promotes Fair Redistricting

From the Altoona Mirror:

The League of Women Voters US has declared April 29 the People Powered Fair Maps National Day of Action to ensure fair redistricting is a nationwide priority.

Local leagues and Fair Districts PA are partnering in actions across the state to draw attention to the redistricting process in Pennsylvania. According to a press release, what happens this year will shape the next 10 years.

Events will take place from April 28-May 1, with most actions happening April 29.

Members of these groups want districts that reflect the will of voters and believe that can happen with a more transparent process, public engagement and clear, measurable map-drawing standards.

The Legislative and Congressional Redistricting Act has all three.

In Pennsylvania, the League of Women Voters has worked toward some kind of reform for more than 30 years and Fair Districts PA has advocated for reform since early 2016.

In Harrisburg on April 28, supporters for redistricting reform will meet at City Island and march to the Capitol steps beginning at 11:45 a.m., where they will meet with others already gathered on the steps. At noon, a small rally will take place.

On April 29, events will be held across the state. Local events will include:

* Cambria County — 6:30 p.m., Singing the Blues for Unfair Voting Districts, Gazebo Park, Main Street, Johnstown.

* Centre County — 10 a.m., Hounding Our Legislators for Redistricting Reform. Walk between Sen. Jake Corman and Rep. Kerry Benninghoff’s Bellefonte offices.
