League Honors PA Women Lawmakers in Special Nonpartisan Event
On June 7th, the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania held an event in Harrisburg to celebrate the achievements of women lawmakers throughout the Commonwealth. There are more women in Pennsylvania's legislature than ever before - making up about 30% of the legislature today.
The event honored Senator Kim Ward, the Senate Majority Leader, and Representative Joanna McClinton, the House Minority Leader. For the first time in Pennsylvania’s history, there is a female majority leader in the Senate and a female minority leader in the House of Representatives.
In their remarks, the lawmakers highlighted legislation they are sponsoring that will benefit women and families. Senator Kristin Phillips-Hill discussed SB 225 which focuses on removing barriers to quality healthcare and improving healthcare outcomes. House Minority Leader Representative Joanna McClinton advocated for HB 2090 which works to protect Pennsylvania’s elections. Representative Mary Jo Daley spoke about HB 1739 which aims to provide mothers with proper workplace accommodations.
All lawmakers, and the League, stressed the need to have more women in office to uplift issues that affect women.
