- A chance to make difference
The League is a way to make a difference. Since 1920, the League has
provided citizens with non-partisan information about public issues
and candidates for office. Here is the LWVGP membership form.
With a League membership you can do many things:
- Help voters. You can help build up the general level of citizen participation
in the electoral process by helping in the League's voters service
work. Our Community Information Center serves
citizens throughtout the year. We publish a legislative
directory, publish candidates guides, sponsor debates or work
in many ways to open up the system.
- Spread some accurate information.
You can help write articles and fact sheets, help organize a forum
on a current issue, produce a video, speak to school and community
groups, or work with the media.
- Change the system.
You can help study new issues, lobby your legislators and government
administrators, testify to your local municipality or county council,
participate in our action network.
The League provides information
The League helps members and the public understand candidates and issues
through:
- Facts for Citizens (directory
of public officials)
- Community Information Center (412-261-4284)
- This web site
- Voters Guide, both on our web site and in newspapers
- Smart Voter web site where candidates
and post information free of charge and voters can compare candidates
- Forums and workshops
- Candidate events
- Providing speakers for other organizations
- Reporting to the public on our observations of government
The members of the LWV of Greater Pittsburgh hold regularly scheduled
unit meetings in the South Hills, Squirrel Hill, and the North Hills,
as well as general meetings at various places.
The League Studies Issues
Members choose issues, research and study information, reach a consensus,
and take a position. Then we advocate for that position. Over the years
the League has developed positions
in several areas including in the following:
- Election laws, voting machines and voting districts
- Legislature: size and procedure
- County government structure
- Campaign finance reform
- Equal opportunity
- Women’s rights
- Health care
- Environmental quality
- Public education
- Affordable housing
- Mass transit
- Taxes
- Property assessment
- Justice system
- Reproductive rights
- United Nations and arms control
The League Takes Action
The League works to influence public policy through advocacy. Armed
with information from our studies, we telephone, fax, write letters,
visit our elected officials, and give testimony at public meetings.
Please Note: Although the League works to promote its
positions on issues, we do not take a position in favor of or against
any candidate for public office or any political party.
Who can join?
Membership is open to any person 18 or older (both women and men).
Remember -- even if you haven't the time for active participation,
your membership alone will strengthen our voice.
