MISSION: The League of Women Voters of Greater Pittsburgh, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.

The League of Women Voters of PA has joined a lawsuit filed with the Commonwealth Court of PA to overturn the voter ID law passed by the General Assembly in March 2012. See more information on the lawsuit including the other organizations involved and the personal stories of the individual plaintiffs in the suit.

Unless the plaintiffs prevail in this lawsuit, there will be a major change for all voters in the November election when you must have a photo ID. A list of the acceptable forms of identification for the new Voter ID Law is at votesPA. Instructions to obtain an acceptable ID for a voter who does not have one are at this PennDOT web site. If you do not currently have an approved ID, start now to get one.

Facts for Citizens: a guide to your elected officials – 2012 Edition for Federal, State, Allegheny County and City of Pittsburgh edition now available in print. Find out who represents you and how to communicate with them. Information about many local municipalities and school districts is posted online.

Another resource for communicating with elected officials are the district maps and contact information published by Duquesne Light in the Use Your Voice booklets (PDF format). Select Allegheny County or Pittsburgh City Council for local officials. There is also a guide for Beaver County. (These documents are current as of April 2011 and do not reflect the November 2011 elections.)
