A
nonpartisan grassroots civics organization |
When women won the right to vote 90 years ago, the League of Women Voters was formed and immediately began the task of helping women register to vote. They also began to hold meetings and study a wide variety of local, state and national political issues so women would informed and knowledgeable voters on election day. We continue to work to build better communities and safeguard our democracy. The League of Women Voters is a grassroots, nonpartisan political organization with 35 local chapters across the Commonwealth. We encourage the informed and active participation in government. We work to increase member and the public understanding of major policy issues and influence public policy through education and advocacy. In 1974, the League expanded its membership to include men. We hope you will join us as we work to build better communities and speak out on state and national issues. At our 2009 Convention in Clarion, the League embarked on a intensive in-depth study of Marcellus Shale, after the Indiana County chapter presented their observations and findings about drilling for natural gas in Pennsylvania. invite you to look at our Marcellus Shale section and see how the League studies. reaches consensus and takes action on issue. I am proud of what was accomplished in just a year and how we continue to learn more about the issue. By the end of 2010, you will be hearing from the League of Women Voters of PA as we start our Redistricting campaign. It may not be an isue that is as visible and easy to view as Marcellus Shale but it is equally important if we are to be fairly represented at all levels of government. If you are not already a member, I hope you will join us! Help us build better communities and make democracy work! Olivia Thorne, President 9/1/2010 |
