LWV and the 2010 Census

link: U.S. Census

An accurate census directly affects our nation’s ability to ensure equal representation and equal access to important governmental resources for all Americans, and thus is one of the most significant civil rights issues facing the country today. Along with many other leagues, we are discussing ways in which we might get involved and support the 2010 Census.

Timeline for the 2010 US Census:
Fall 2008 Recruitment began for local census jobs for early census operations
March 2009 Census employees went door-to-door to update address list nationwide
Fall 2009 Recruitment began for census takers needed for peak workload in2010
October 2009 Remaining Local Census Offices opened
February 2010 Questionnaire Assistance Centers opened
April 1, 2010 Census Day
April 2010 Non-response follow-up will occur through June

Legislative Interviews 2010

legislators answer questions at the legislative interviews of the league of Lower Merion

Above: Carol Snow, President of LWV LMN, presents questions to state legislators.

On January 29th, members of the League of Women Voters of Lower Merion and Narbeth hosted the state legislators for this area at a lively and informative meeting. In attendance were State Senator Daylin Leach (17th Senate District), Kathy Manderino 194th Leg. District, Tim Briggs 149th Leg. District, and Mike Gerber 148th Leg. District.

The League of Women Voters of Lower Merion and Narberth has been conducting Legislative Interviews for the public since the early 1920s. This annual event provides a remarkably candid perspective on what's been happening in Harrisburg as well as predictions of what is likely to get legislative attention during the coming months.

This year the LWV questions related to the budget process, legislative operations, and natural resources, but in addressing these questions, many other issues were touched on. The answers of the legislators will be posted here when available. However, remember that these responses cannot capture the tone, nuance and cross-conversation of the meeting. Be sure to plan to attend next year's legislative interviews to get the full experience!

Observer Corps tells the story of Lower Merion Tax changes

and here's a taste of the December 2009 Observer:

..."An interesting sidelight to the official debate: the budget discussions have sparked a web-site “war”. An on-line petition has been circulating and collecting signatures to support a no-new-tax position. A group, Lower Merion Citizens for Responsible Budgeting (LMCRB), that also calls for spending restraint, is asking residents, in newspaper ads and a postcard mailing, “How much longer will you be able to afford to stay in Lower Merion?” Another group, called “Citizens Advocating for Lower Merion”, or CALM, wants to be the voice of residents who value the high level of township services that brought them here in the first place..."

Thank you Dottie-Sue Lotke for these excellent Observer Corps Reports!

Featured League Story from Villanova:

What if you wanted to get elected or needed a job? I got elected to the school board because the mayor knew me from the League and I got my first major publishing job through contacts at the League. And the League has been doing this for 90 years! –Gretchen VanDenbergh, Voter Newsletter 10th year, LWV LMN

Drilling the Marcellus Shale in PA

Our state League, LWVPA and many of our local PA Leagues are studying the issues surrounding the drilling of the Marcellus Shale which covers about two-thirds of PA. If you are interested in working with us (whether member or friend) please contact us: lwvoters@mac.com

LWVPA held a Marcellus Shale Forum on October 3, 2009 in Philadelphia.

Marcellus Shale Workshop: February, 9, 2009

Just in from the LWV Radnor:
February 9, 2010
7-9:00pm
Radnor Township Building 301 Iven Avenue

Topic: The Importance of Marcellus Shale Natural Gas Extraction in Pennsylvania
Guest Speaker: Carole Collier, Executive Director Delaware River Basin Commission
Food for Thought: 1) It is anticipated that up to 90 years of natural gas will be extracted from the Marcellus Shale. 2) Many jobs will be created aiding Pennsylvania’s economy. 3) Shale extraction requires millions of gallons of water. 4) Should severance taxes be levied on “big oil and gas” to pay for treatment facilities of air and water? 5) What effect will this extraction have on the air and water quality of our region? 6) There will be a need to enlarge environmental agencies to monitor these endeavors.

This is an event of the LWV of Radnor, PA supported by the LWV of Lower Merion and Narberth

PLAN ON ATTENDING!! BRING A FRIEND! LIGHT REFRESHMENTS

Smartvoter

click here to check out smartvoter.org

At a local County LWV meeting it was decided that we would try smartvoter. Smartvoter originates with the LWV of California. The purpose of smartvoter is similar to vote411, where infomation is given to the voter based on their address or county. However, they can also access information about candidates which is new.

Smartvoter differs in that candidates put up any information they have such as a link to their website, videos, and answering the questions that come from National LWV.

We do not nave the resources to check the content and interface with candidates, so we are asking for members to come forward and volunteer. Student volunteers/interns are welcome.
